The top 10 most viewed Pakistani dramas of all time

To this day, the Pakistani drama industry continues to grow and expand. Thanks to the amazing actors and actresses who bring these characters to life, dramas have become an important cultural aspect of Pakistan that stretches far beyond the country’s borders. 

However, there are a few dramas that have stayed in the hearts of audiences long after they first aired, many even earning themselves an international following (including one or two that were even adapted into Bollywood movies). Here are the top 10 most viewed Pakistani dramas of all time.




1) Humsafar

Humsafar is a story of two people who are separated by life's circumstances. They live in two different worlds; one with privilege and ease, the other with poverty and toil. The drama tells us that no matter how difficult the circumstances, it’s never too late to find love. 

Feroz (Karan Kundra) is a rich and privileged young man living an extravagant lifestyle in London who returns to Karachi for his brother's wedding. 

There he meets Aroosa (Saba Qamar), a beautiful but unhappily married woman from Pakistan’s wealthy elite social circles. They fall madly in love with each other but their class differences cause them immense heartache as they have to make impossible decisions about their future together.


2) Zindagi Gulzar Hai

Zindagi Gulzar Hai is one of the best Pakistani TV series. In this drama, a group of friends reunite after a long time. They had once been inseparable and now they find themselves at different places in life. The story revolves around their lives and friendships and the challenges that come with it. 

Zindagi Gulzar Hai is an emotional and entertaining drama that takes you on a roller coaster ride, even while tackling difficult subjects like depression and drug addiction. 

This drama also stars some famous actors including Meera, Amina Sheikh, Irsa Ghazal, Ayeza Khan, Ali Rehman Khan, Bilal Abbas Khan and Syed Jibran.


3) Pyaray Afzal

One of the more recent and popular dramas to have come out in Pakistan is Pyaray Afzal, which aired on Geo TV. The drama was a joint effort between Hum TV and Geo TV. It was based on the novel Peechay by Farhat Ishtiaq. 

The drama revolves around the lives of two sisters, Sara (Sanam Saeed) and Afia (Aamina Sheikh), who live in an old-fashioned village where men are given preference over women. They both fall for a young man named Hassan (Feroze Khan). 

Sara's father arranges her marriage with a much older man, but she elopes with Hassan instead. As a result, Sara's family decides to marry Afia off to Hassan.


4) Diyar-e-Dil

Diyar-e-Dil is a drama that has been ranked as the number one Pakistani drama of all time. The show aired on Hum TV and was directed by Furqan Qamar. 

It starred Mahira Khan, Sheheryar Munawar and Ayeza Khan. It tells the story of two families who are in love but cannot be together because they come from different backgrounds.


5) Shehrnaz

It has a total of eleven seasons, and is the longest running drama on Geo TV. It’s aired in many countries including India, Pakistan, USA and UK. 

The show focuses on the story about a woman called Shehrnaz who moves to Karachi from Peshawar in search for her lost daughter. 

With her help, she finds out that her daughter is alive and kidnaps her. The drama revolves around their relationship as mother and daughter and shows how their bond grows stronger over time.


6) Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai

Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai is a hit drama serial by Hum TV. Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai is a story about two sisters and the love they share. The story starts with Hassna (Sanam Chaudhry) who falls in love with Sheraz (Fahad Mustafa). 

Hassna's family doesn't approve of her relationship and they are unable to get married. Sheraz goes on to marry another woman, which causes Hassna to fall into depression. Hassna later finds out that she has an incurable disease and when she tells Sheraz this, he agrees to divorce his wife so that the two can be together again.


7) Tum Kon Piya

1. Shehrnaz is a drama that aired in the year 2000 and was directed by Syed Ali Raza Usama, written by Abdullah Ishtiaq and produced by Naeem Abbasi. 

The drama starred famous actors like Neeli, Babar Ali, Shafqat Cheema and others. The story revolved around Shehrnaz (played by Neeli) who was a servant to the Nawab family in Punjab. 

She loved her job so much that she refused to go back home because her mother was ill and needed expensive treatment which she couldn't afford on her salary. To support herself, she became an entrepreneur with the help of Birjees (Babar Ali) who then falls in love with her.


8) Sammi

Tum Kon Piya is a popular drama that was aired on Hum TV in 2012. The story revolves around two friends, Saad and Fahad who are in love with the same girl, Iffat. 

Iffat's father has told her that she can marry only one man but she does not know which one it will be. Saad and Fahad are excited about their future with Iffat but when they find out about her decision, they don't take it well and end up fighting over her!


9) Dil Banjaara

One of the most popular Pakistani dramas is Dil Banjaara, which aired in 2012. The show follows a woman named Nargis who moves to Lahore after her mother dies. There, she struggles with love, family, and the realities of life while trying to find her place in this new world. 

Dil Banjaara stars Saba Hameed as Nargis (also known as Nina), Sajal Ali as Nargis's sister-in-law Zohra (also known as Zoya), and Fawad Khan as Hassan. This drama has also been remade into a Bollywood movie titled Kurbaan starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan that was released in 2009.


10) Sanam

Sanam is the story of a simple girl who is in love with a boy from her neighborhood. Her mother often warns her against this type of relationship, but she cannot help it. She falls for him and he falls for her too. 

However, the boy's family does not approve and they refuse to allow them to get married. As time passes, Sanam has an arranged marriage with a wealthy man who also falls in love with her. 

But, true love remains and after many obstacles, it prevails. The story ends on a happy note with Sanam getting married to the man she loved since childhood while keeping her first husband as well so that he can be close to his son whom he adores.
